On the site of Yarra River Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria. There are amazing events and festivals in Melbourne with great shopping and live passion for eating and drinking. Beautiful parks and gardens in Melbourne will make you bliss and the discovery of gold will give the glance of prosperous age. Reach Melbourne from Melbourne Airport is also called as Tullamarine Airport which is the primary airport in the city of Melbourne. Opened in the year 1970 it replaced the nearby Essendon Airport and is the second busiest airport in Australia. It is located 23 kilometers away from city centre and nearby the suburb of Tullamarine. Third most traveled passenger air route in the world is Melbourne Sydney air route. Direct flights for all the states and territories of Australia travel from this airport. This airport also serves flights to other destinations like Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania. It is the hub for Virgin Blue and Qantas and home base for Jet star and Tiger Airways Australia.

Melbourne airport is the common destination for five capital cities out of seven. In case of export and import freight Melbourne is the second busiest airport as of December 2008. Melbourne Airport received Eagle Award from International Air Transport Association for its services. National Tourism Awards were also given to this airport for tourism services. There are four terminals on this airport, one international terminal, two domestic terminals, and one budget terminal. Airline Consultancy Company named Sky trax rated Melbourne airport as four star international airports.

Melbourne Airport replaced Essendon Airport as it was unable to meet the demands of passengers and air travel. The runways of Essendon Airport were too short to handle the domestic and international airlines. Increase in passenger traffic was difficult to handle on the Essendon’s runways. This airport was surrounded by residential housing and this was the main problem for the expansion of Essendon Airport. Prime Minister Robert Menzies announced a five year plan to build AU$45 million “Jetport”on 27th November 1962. Tullamarine was the site chosen to maintain the proximity to Essendon. Ansett Australia launched the Boeing 727 in October 1964 and it was the first jet aircraft used for domestic air travel in Australia which again increased the demand for new airport.

By the year 1967 the airport was ready to serve aircrafts but not passenger flights. On 22nd December 1967 Air Force One landed at this airport with United States President Lyndon B. Johnson. On 1st July 1970 Prime Minister John Gorton opened the airport and from 26th June 1971 domestic flights from Essedon were transferred to this new airport. During the first year of operation Melbourne airport handed six international airlines with 155,275 international passengers. The Federal Airports Corporation was formed by Australian Government in 1988 and Melbourne Airport was placed under operational control with more 21 airports of the nation. In the year 1994 the Australian Government announced that Federal Airports Corporation will operate the airports and some airports will be privatized.

Runways & Terminals

There are two intersecting runways at Melbourne Airport with the area of 3,657 meters. North-South runway and East-West runway. The expansion of these runways is under planning, because of increasing traffic there is a need for third runway. Category III landing system is also introduced which allows plans to land in unexpected weather conditions and this will be one of the unique systems in Australia. There are four terminals on Melbourne Airport. These terminals have 56 gates which 16 international and 40 domestic. The numbering system of these terminals was started in July 2005. Terminal 1 serves the domestic services for Jet Star, Qantas, Qantas Group airlines, and Qantas Link. First floor is the place for Departures and ground floor is the place for arrivals. There are 15 parking bays in this terminal with aerobridges. Terminal 2 handles international flights out of Melbourne Airport. This terminal has 16 gates with aerobridges. Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, United Airlines, Air New Zealand, and Emirates Airline operate from this terminal. Terminal 3 is the home for Virgin Blue and Regional Express and has eleven parking bays with a single aerobridge. Terminal 4 is called as South Terminal or Domestic Express and is given to budget airlines. This is the first conventional facility in Australia. This terminal was originally constructed for Impulse Airlines and Virgin Blue. Virgin Blue was shifter the Terminal 3. This concept of Budget terminal model was taken from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Singapore Change Airport. Terminal 3 has lower landing fees due to less basic facilities like lack of aerobridges as compare to conventional terminal

Cairns is the great way to Great Barrier Reef and Tropical Rainforests with enormous adventure. It is a perfect family destination where you can enjoy the adventure, water adventure with amazing scenic beauty. Cairns Airport is the main airport serves domestic and international flights. It was initially operated by Cairns Port Authority as taken from Queensland Government in the year 2008. Cairns airport is the seventh busiest airport in Australia and is located 4 miles on the north of Cairns central business district in Aeroglen. Cairns International Airport lies between Mount Whitfield on the west side while Trinity Bay on the east. There are many helicopter operators which are also operated from here. It is the main airport to reach major Australian cities and destinations. From Far North Queensland to Asia-Pacific region this is the first step to reach the destinations of world. This airport is the main base of Australian Airlines from June 2006. It is also the main place for Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia with search and rescue helicopters of the State Emergency Service. Recently this airport is renovated and extended to new modern design.

In the year 1928 Tom McDonald was the person who was traveling in his Gypsy Moth in the sandy area of present airport. He was unable to take off and land in the high tides and in the time of emergency he was forced to take off from barrels. Royal Australian Air Force used this place during the Second World War. The main runway of the airport was made long for the RAAF aircraft. During 1942 the airport was the transport base for American Air Force with their 33rd Troop Carrier Squadron. In the year 1943 the first Runway was sealed and from that year to 1997 the airport saw many changes and after all these changes and renovations Cairns International Airport became the main airport hub for all the domestic and international flights. Ansett Australia faced financial collapse in September 2001and gave off services to this airport after 66 years. The terminals of the airport were sold to Cairns Port Authority and given on lease to Jet Star and Virgin Blue. The Golden Wing Lounge is still the temporarily lounge used by Qantas as interim Qantas Club. The replacement lounge was renovated while the remains of Ansett are still there on this lounge.

There are two passenger terminals on this airport which are located on the eastern side. These terminals have two separate buildings of 200 meters with the air traffic control tower. Near to the Captain Cook Highway on the western side the area is for general aviation. There is new Qantas Club lounge which is under construction and the Golden Wing lounge is under Qantas Club.

It is the fifth busiest airport in Australia and principal airport in Adelaide in South Australia. It served 6.9 million passengers in 2008/09. It is located flanking to West Beach and it 6 kilometers away from the city centre. It is under long term lease from Commonwealth Government since 1998. Adelaide Airport was first established in the year 1955 and domestic and international terminals were opened in the year 2005. Adelaide Airport has received many awards and named one of the world’s second best international airports in the year 2006. It serves as a hub for Tiger Airways.

Aerodrome was the first Adelaide Airport which was constructed in 1921 on the area of 24 hectares of land in Hendon. There was a small mail facility between Adelaide and Sydney. To face the challenges of growth in aviation sector, Parafield Airport was developed in the year 1927. Again to meet the demands of aviation in Australia Parafield was outgrown and the site of Adelaide Airport was selected for West Beach and in the year 1954 the flights started landing on this newly made Adelaide Airport. This airport acted as an annexe for Parafield airport and served passenger terminal until the Commonwealth Government provided funds for it construction. From the year 1982 the arrival of international airlines became regular on this airport. The $260 million construction replaced the international and domestic terminals which were made on temporary basis. In the year 2006 the newly made terminal of Adelaide Airport was named the Capital City Airport of the year during the Australian Aviation Industry Awards in Cairns. In 2007 this airport was rated as the world’s second best airport by Airports Council International awards in Dubai. It is the main hub for Tiger Airways Australia and plans of expansion of this airport is announced in the year 2007.

Hasen Yuncken was the builders who redeveloped this airport with more modern facilities and the old airport terminals were having limited capacity and lack of aerobridges. Plans were made to develop the airport with modern facilities and upgraded terminal to meet the demands of the tourists. In the year 1997 final proposal was released when both domestic and international terminals were separated. The conflict of collapse of Ansett Australia then duopoly with the domestic carrier Qantas face many losses of funds and the construction of new terminal was stopped and until the pass of new agreement by the year 2002.

On 7th October 2005 the new terminal was opened by the Prime Minister John Howard and with the hands of Mike Rann who is South Australian Premier. Because of the problems with the fuel and underground pipes Adelaide Airport Limited announced the use of new terminal for the international flights. The problem of re-fueling system was solved by all debris and the new terminal was used for all the flights from 17th February 2006. The new terminal is 850 meters and has the capacity of handling 27 aircraft which includes Airbus A380. It serves 3,000 passengers per hour. It has very high amenities for public and airline lounges. There are around 14 glass sided aerobridges, 42 common user check in desks and around 34 shop fronts. This is the first Australian airport which provides free wireless Internet in the terminal with the help of Internode Systems.

As a part of pilot training and testing program, a historic landing was made by Qantas A380 at the airport on 27th September 2008 it was a 25 minute stop over which attracted many visitors before it flew to Melbourne. Adelaide Metro operates many JetBus busses which help the tourists to reach different locations in Adelaide. There is shuttle bus from the airport to central Adelaide.
