Boeing Company, in response to Airbus made a competitive offering, announced that it will soon be rolling out a modified 737, the best selling plane from the manufacturer.

The narrowbody will have more efficiency as well as a new engine. The company mentioned that it had received orders for five airlines, for four hundred and ninety six of the new Boeings from five airlines.

The name of the new model will be 737 Max, and will be in competition with the newly redeveloped A320neo family of planes from Airbus, a European company. The Airbus model is similar and has fuel saving engines. The Airbus fleet will be delivered in 2015.

The Boeing jet will be fitted with engines from CFM international, which is jointly ventured into by Safran from France, and General Electric. The renewed engine plan was approved by the board, as said by Boeing on Tues.

Boeing Company is based in Chicago. The company spokesperson Jim AlBaugh, Chief Executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, has said that the 737 Max will help the company not only maintain the current market share, but also grow more.

Boeing 737 Max will have a fuel burn lower by sixteen per cent that the current Airbus models. It will also be lower by 4 per cent when compared to the Airbus A320 neo, and will have operating costs that are lower overall.

Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport will be opening a new passenger concourse as large as fifty thousand square feet and costing upto $ 20 million. The new addition is hoped to draw in attention from low cost airline services.

Chairman of the board of Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, Philip Taldo said that even though they receive a number of complaints on the expensive flights offered, the airport could not help it as there are just so many destinations for accommodating the business traffic. Taldo said that it is hoped that a low cost carrier will be attracted to the airport over the next ten years.

At the present, the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport has 6 air carriers serving it, and this includes the budget carrier Allegiant Air. Tulsa International Airport has five carriers serving it. Unlike the latter airport more than seventy per cent of the passenger traffic at the Arkansas Airport is business travelers.

Northwest Arkansas is home to a number of major corporations, mainly Wal Mart, J.B Hunt, Tyson and the University of Arkansas. It was the large quantity of business traffic as well as the impetus from the major corporations that led to the establishment of the airport authority, and also the $ 101 million airport in 1998. The citizens of the Benton, Washington, Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale and Fayetteville set up the airport authority with counties and cities on board. The airport has been quite successful.

A union of engineers working for Qantas Airways Ltd has announced that they will be on strike for one hour everyday in protest against the airlines. These one hour stoppages will continue right until December, one week prior to Christmas. The announcement was made by the union on Fri.

Qantas Airways announced on Tuesday that it would be launching a new premium carrier in Asia, mostly Malaysia or Singapore, which would not be carrying the Qantas Brand. In addition, there would be a low cost carrier launched in Japan.

The engineer union was the first to launch industrial action against the airline since the announcement. Unions representing baggage handlers and pilots have also made threats of industrial action, as they claim that the airline is cutting costs by outsourcing jobs offshore, and thus jeopardizing safety.

The claims were denied by Qantas, which said that an Asian hub needed to be established in the region, if the carrier was to compete with others in the area.

The one hour work strikes will start when each shift begins. Brisbane will see action on Monday, whereas on Tuesday and Thursday it is the Sydney domestic terminal (for the latter, only A380s and base maintenance), Adelaide on Wednesday, and Melbourne on Friday.

Federal secretary, the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association, Steve Purvinas said that the unions had been in negotiation with the carrier for job security terms for close to a year. He also said that the new announcement by Qantas to shrink the airline in favor of the new Asia based companies has killed any progress made in this direction.

A majority of the flights were halted on 25th Jul 2011. Two daily Boise Reno flights were canned, and in addition to this, there were two daily Boise – Seattle flights, and two daily Boise Salt Lake City flights that were halted service.

The Boise Seattle runs were quickly filled by Alaska Airlines stepping in. Delta Airlines is now thinking of increasing its flights to Salt Lake City as well. This was revealed by the deputy director of the airport, head of business development and properties, Bryant Francis.

However, flights to Reno from Boise have not been yet replaced by other airlines. This was a key service. The information revealed by Boise Airport states that, in the fourth quarter of 2010, there were 12, 141 passengers flying from Boise to Reno on the Southwest Airlines flights. Currently, the airport is in the process of discussing options with other airlines to re-establish direct flights from Boise to Reno. Talks are going on.

George Naccara, director of TSA declared at Logan International Airport that if they do not have the talent within the agency, hiring will be done from the outside. He also said that a different pool force will be hired, and that prior experience in the fields of military, air force, law enforcement and others will be looked for.

The screening program is a first in the nation, and will begin at 15th Aug at the Logan International Airport and determines whether fliers pose a danger based on their reactions to a set of routine questions.

The present force of the TSA has been criticized all over the nation for abuses for having made numerous errors in judgment and even abuses during physical searches. Airport security experts said that the present force is inadequate for the job.

Naccara said that having an ill equipped force will not derail the program, and that higher caliber agents would be recruited if necessary.

The Department of Homeland Security released some new documents recently that have revealed that there have been close to twenty five thousand security breaches occurred at US airports all over the country, right from Nov 2001. This is an average of seven security breaches in one day.

The documents were presented at a House subcommittee meeting yesterday. USA Today obtained the documents in advance, but they do not go into much detail regarding the security breaches. They do not contain information on whether they could have had the possibility of leading to potential attacks on airplanes or commuters.

Among the twenty five thousand breaches, more than fourteen thousand of these were people that entered areas that general public was not permitted to such as airport passageways or doors that had limited access. There were also unauthorized entries into planes from airport buildings.

Relative to the enormous volumes of traffic that the four hundred and fifty major airports in the United States experience, this number of infractions actually appears pretty small. There have been more than five and a half billion passengers served in the almost ten years from 2001. However, some critics do suggest reasons for worrying.

Rep Jason Chaffetz, R Utah, chairman of the House subcommittee on National Security, Homeland Defense and Foreign Operations, said that for all the efforts made in the way of persistence, time and money to make airports secure, it is all a real mess, and that airports are clearly not secure.

However, Nicholad Kimball, Spokesman from TSA Transportation Security Administration, said that “breach” is a term that has broad definitions, and includes accidental violations with no danger posed.

The New York Metro Area and the group responsible for managing the airports of New York are in the process of studying certain proposals for expansion for the airports. This was after a warning about the possible harm to the economy of the region that could be incurred if the increasing demand for air travel in the city is not fulfilled.

The Port Authority of New York received a huge number of proposals before the deadline set at 1st of Jul for the comments on the plans for expansion of usage at the Newark Liberty Airport, John F Kennedy Airport and the LaGuardia Airport. This was part of the information give by a spokesman from the Port Authority.

These three airports have been reported in 2010 as the worst in the entire United States with regards to cancellations and delays. This was part of a report filed in 2010 by the Federal Aviation Administration. All three airports are facing congestion and delays, and along with the rising growth of passenger numbers is finding it difficult to cope up. If passengers are not provided with new facilities, the airports will not have the capability to meet the city’s demand for passenger air service any longer.

By 2030, the number of annual passengers flying by plane would increase to a whopping 150 million from the 104 million it is now. According to a study released in January by the Regional Plan Association a group focusing on urban research, some of the airports in the region would need to be redesigned so as to accommodate an additional seventy eight flights per hour in the peak time, up from the two hundred and thirty six it is now.

The socialist government of Greece pushed back the deadline yet another time for the EUR € 1 billion tender award for a new airport in Crete. This is the fifth time the government has postponed the project, which has been seen as a measure of the appetite investors have for deals in the recession affected country.

Since winning power in 2009 Oct, Kasteli is the first project in infrastructure on a major scale undertaken by the Greek Government. This is one of a number of sizeable investments that the country will require if it is looking at kick starting growth as well as exit the debt crisis.

The deadline for the tender award was set to run out by Tues this week was again extended to 18 t h Oct. This was in accordance with a decision made by the Ministry of Infrastructure. This information was published on a Greek government website.

The ministry explained that the parties that have expressed interest in the project have also stated their concern over the vastness of the project and the viability, which is why the tender has been postponed yet again, so as to address the requests.

9th Feb 2010 was the initial deadline set for the tender to open bids as well as selecting a winner. The deadline has been pushed back for five times now.

Greece is a major destination for tourism in Europe, and Crete one of the most visited destinations. If Kasteli materializes, it will be the second busiest airport after Athens, with respect to foreign traffic. The present airport at Crete, the Heraklion Airport is outdated, and is ill equipped to handle the pressure of more than two million passengers in a year.

The document also revealed that the project has been expressed interest in by Vinci, the largest construction company in the world from France, Archirodon, J&P Avaz, Ellaktor from Greece and Bouygues.

The airport is co financed by the Greek Government, the European Union as well as the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The airport may be operational by summer 2015.
