Gary Chicago International Airport has long been awaiting an expansion. The project has been given the green light for take off. Officials in the Northwest Indiana region are in the hope that this will draw investors and create new jobs.

The Northwest Indiana is experiencing one of the biggest developments in the economy of the region. The Post Tribune, Merrillville reported Mayor of Gary Rudy Clay as having said that the regions engine will turn on the groundbreaking Wednesday.

The project will cost upwards of $ 153 Million and is expected to take up to two and a half years in completion. The project will be inclusive of extending the main runway of the airport from the present seven thousand to eight thousand nine hundred feet.

This will enable the airport to handle cargo planes and most passenger airlines of larger sizes. A deal that permitted the removal of railroad tracks that blocked the expansion of the runway was approved by the airport authority last month.

The expansion plans for the airport started in the year 2006, when the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) had issued a letter of intent for $ 57.8 million as funding for the project, but the project trailed on as a result of the extended negotiations that were required with the railroads over the tracks that were required to be moved from the end of the main runway.

The project will be inclusive of a head quarters building for the Gary jet Center costing about $ 7.1 million. This will include a forty square foot hangar and a six thousand sq ft of office space.

Steve Landry, Airport Interim Director stated to the Post Tribune that the expansion will create more than thousand new jobs in the region and will draw in investors. Although runway construction will not kick of till 2012, work will start on changing the soil at a former landfill.

City Officials are hoping that the redevelopment project will push the airport to the third position behind the O Hare and the Midway among the biggest hubs in the region. A number of speakers are reported to have thanked Chicago for the $ 9.5 m it has invested in the expansion project.

Thunderstorms and high winds resulted in flights going to Atlanta and New York to be delayed as the eastern and south east United States is being affected by severe weather.

The planes heading toward the Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International, the busiest airport in the world, as well as the La Guardia Airport in New York were delayed until the storms lessened. This was announced at the official website of the Federal Aviation administration website. There were close to five hundred flights cancelled today, as the Flight Aware tracking service reported.

Eight main states had areas that have a possibility of being affected by tornados, and are part of the tornado watches. Destructive storms may develop here. The list included locations such as Washington, Baltimore, New York, Buffalo and other major areas, as reported by the National Weather Service. There were severe thunderstorms also reported to be possible in southern Ontario, and this includes Toronto, as reported by Environment Canada.

Spots across Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi showed signs of rotation in the US weather service radars. The systems are reliable, and the possibility of major tornado outbreaks is high.

If the Golden Triangle, with Atlanta, Chicago and New York on its corners, is affected by storms, there could be a huge number of flight cancellations and delays. There were close to six hundred and seventy eight flights cancelled all over the United States yesterday.

A flight preparing to take off from the LaGuardia Airport in New York on 14th April was evacuated as a result of a bomb scare. The bomb scare was a dud though, and a credit card reader that was running low on battery is blamed.

The US airways Flight 2138 was just preparing for takeoff when alert passengers reported something ticking suspiciously in the cabin areas, as the airline spokesman reported. The plane was supposed to take off at 6 pm.

As soon as passengers reported the problem, the tower was asked by the pilot to taxi the plane to a remote area and dispatched authorities. The plane was evacuated and all ninety nine passengers were helped out by the rescue workers.

The passengers were taken to the terminal building, while the cargo hold and the cabin area of the plane was searched. The cause turned out to be a portable credit card reader that was running low on battery, because of which the low battery indictor was beeping. The passengers were re boarded and the flight took off in some time.

Nancy Campbell, 33 years old, was in for a three minute ordeal before setting off from LaGuardia Airport, Chicago. Campbell was left humiliated after the security pat down by the TSA agent (Transportation Security Administration) when she was allegedly touched on the breast, crotch and inner thighs, after being asked to stand spread eagled.

Campbell, an urban planner based in Brooklyn, said that the frisking felt more like fondling, and it continued on for three minutes. The incident happened as Campbell was heading to the gate after already clearing security. She was stopped by a female agent who asked her to stop and drop her luggage and stand spread eagled.

Campbell says that she was not asked to step through a scanner. She was patted down in the offensive manner while other passengers looked on, and when she voiced protest, the TSA Agent asked her to stand still and stop flailing about and let her do her job, without which she will not be allowed to fly.

Campbell says she was left traumatized and was in tears throughout her journey. She likened the experience to being physically assaulted.

There have been a huge number of protests against TSA and their pat down policies.
