Germany’s Gateway to World: Hamburg



Water, water everywhere – is best way to describe Hamburg. The Hamburg port is the second biggest port in whole Europe and stands ninth in the world.  Initially known as ‘Gateway to world’, Hamburg is the second largest city of the Germany. The city is modern, young, friendly and at the same time totally opposite. One hand you will see rich and vibrant part of the city and if you go to St. Pauli, you will see poorest side of the city and the Reeperbahn is known as sinful mile in St. Pauli. The each of the sides is different but they are bind together harmonically. Being the largest and populous city in Germany, Hamburg has variety of art and culture, its music is famous world widely, great range of hotels and restaurants, vibrant nightlife, and numbers of historical landmarks that dates back from twelve hundred years ago. If you want to experience and want to know the X-factor of the city, you have to come here and find it out yourself!

To get started, you should start by the Hamburg Warehouse Complex. The whole complex is build up of red bricks with gables and turrets. The place has historic touch and still it is been used as warehouse to store goods. The place is made tourist attraction by building open-air theater, spice museum, miniature exhibition and even Old Russian submarine is on display. If you want to see the horrible and violent part of history, you should to go to ‘Hamburg Dungeon’. At night the view of the place is mind blowing. The whole place is illuminated by the lights and only way to get enchanted by the view is by the boat ride on the harbor night tour.

Blankenese HamburgThe most magnificent view of the city is Blankenese where you will experience some old fashioned way of living. Blankenese is located on the steep Elbe hillside. The place is popular for family outings. The place is filled by peace, calmness, and picturesque view of the packed houses and narrow alleys all together on the Cliffside is just stunning. Formerly it was a fishing village mostly dwelling place for the retired ship captains. But now the place has many cafes and hotels, restaurants to choose from. St. Pauli is nearby the Blankenese, so you will get ferry from St. Pauli to Blankenese.

The sinful mile, Reeperbahn, is famous among young travelers to have fun. It is a red light district in the St. Pauli zone and has become second most visited by the tourists, according to the city management. Reeperbahn, in English means Rope Street , was the street where the rope were produced and sold for ships in the harbor. Now it is a half-mile long street with many bright lights on the buildings and prostitutes standing alluring every pass-goer. The street has many bars and hotel offering erotic entertainment. The street became part of the city in nineteenth century when sailors were not allowed inside the city, so for their entertainment this place came in existence. The district also has one privately owned Erotic Art Museum, which displays the history of Reeperbahn, and young children below 16 years old are not allowed.

Alster LakeThe last but not the least is the Alster Lake situated in the middle of the city. That portion of the city is known of the heartland of the city. The Alster Lake covers one hundred and sixty hectares of land which is in center of the city. It is divided into two parts inner Alster and outer Alster. It is the most amazing place for city’s panoramic view. The tourists come here to relax and have fun, canyoning or rowing. There are many restaurants and hotels where you can have lunch or dine, enjoying the most scenic view of the city.

Most of the action of nightlife can be only seen in St. Pauli at Reeperbahn. The place has numbers of bars and pubs and mainly famous for sex trade. Another central nightlife place is the Schanzenviertel. If you just want to have good time drinking then for bars and pubs are Lange Reihe Street and Grossneumarkt square.

Hamburg Airport is the main airport in Hamburg. It is just five miles north to the center of the city. You will get taxis and buses from the airport to your designated hotels or anywhere else. Train services are there from whole Europe to Hamburg, which stops at the main central station Hauptbahnhof Sud or at Altona, Dammtor, Bergedorf and Hamburg. There are not any direct trains from UK. In order to come you have change train at Brussels or at Paris. From UK National Express have regular coach services from London to Hamburg. The roads in Germany are well connected to all neighboring countries.
