The earlier “Embakasi” terminal today is used for Cargo and for Kenya Air France training facility which was built prior to the 1960s.
This airport serves nearly 4,861,706 passengers with its code as NBO and has an official website named WWW.kenyaairports.co.ke. Overall, it has three passenger terminals in a separate building and a particular cargo terminal. Recently, the expansion project was started at the airport in the year 2006 leading to the increase of its capacity to three times with the increased taxiway and aircraft parking areas. Planning was also undertaken to renovate the airport with the separation of arrival and departure areas. The passengers are rising yearly at this airport and if the expansion projects get over then the number of passengers will increase to nine million.
This airport was opened in the year 1958 during the month of May by Evelyn Baring who was the last Governor of Kenya. This was named as the Nairobi Embakasi Airport but after the construction of a terminal next to the runway this airport was renamed as Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Today, the old terminal is sometimes called as Old Embakasi Airport. This airport is used by the Kenya Air Force.
As the airport has three terminals, the 1 and 2 units are largely used for the International flights and the unit 3 is used for the domestic flights.
