Mangalore Airport incident: Search continues for Black Box

A worst nightmare took its place on Saturday 23 May, when the Air India Express airliner crashed outside the Mangalore Airport. This major incident killed 158 people out of which 8 people has miraculously survived. Right on the same day of the incident, all the bodies were recovered. However, one thing that has remained a mystery is the Black Box.

Air India Express crashOfficials are still searching the crucial black box, so that they could get into the conclusion. In this case, all the debris and the bodies were found, but the black box is yet to come out from the curtain. The officials have found the cockpit voice recorder of the Boeing 737-800 on Sunday morning. To make the things clear, special investigation team has also joined their hands with the Indian officials from USA just to assist and investigate the actual cause of the crash. In its statement, Boeing said, “they are also planning to send a team to assist in investigation”.

The plane was actually coming to India in Mangalore from Dubai and the incident took place while landing on the Table Top runway. As far as the cockpit voice recorder is concerned, it has shown that everything was normal until 1-minute prior to the crash. After that, there was no indication of this disaster. However, the airport control was lost its contact 20 minutes prior to the crash.

As the investigators are trying hard to dig out the actual cause of crash, one big question has taken birth – whether the runway configuration meets with the relevant international specifications. If we look at the runway 06/24, which is the second and the newest of the other runways at the Mangalore Airport, a major cause of concern arises. The runway was commissioned in May 2006 and was built in the purpose to serve the airport by handling larger and longer-range jet aircraft as compared to the already present runway. This new runway has a length of 2459 meter, which highlights Runway End Safety Areas of 60 meters length each.
