SpanAir is an airline in Spain which has its headquarters in the SpanAir Building in the L’Hospitalet de Llorbregat near the area of Barcelona. This was actually a subsidiary of the Scandinavian Airlines which is today a holder of around 20% in the company.
SpanAir has a specific network of passengers within the countries of Europe and Spain and extends to West Africa. There are worldwide charters that fly the airlines for tour companies. With El Prat airport as its main centre, there are other smaller airports in Madrid and in Palma de Mallorca which cater to SpanAir.

SpanAir has around 3161 employees. Around January 25, 2011 the company saw a financial situation which was in great emergency. The government of Catalonia approved the loan of around10.5 million Euros so that the airline could be saved. Since then the revenue of SpanAir has improved and the company has undergone a lot of cost cutting and the government has always been supportive of the airline.
Established in the year 1986, the airlines began its operation sometime in the year 1988. This was a joint effort between the Vaiajes Marsans and Scandinavian Airlines and started its operations with European Charters. There are long haul flights to the United States of America, Dominican Republic and Mexico. These were launched in the year 1991. Then the domestic flights followed in the year 1994 in the month of March. There were long haul flights that the airlines flew with the aircrafts of Boeing 767 300ER to Washington and also to Buenos Aires sometime in the late 1990s. Then SpanAir joined the Star Alliance on May 1 2003.
The SAS Group Scandinavian Airlines Systems owned around 94% of the company and announced the sale of its shares in SpanAir. This divestment was however cancelled in the year 2008 as the SAS was not able to sell for a rate that was a little low by the standards of SpanAir. In the year 2009 on January 30 there was a euro bid from some investors from Catalonia which was led by the Consorci de Turisme de Barcelona. Then the Catalana d’Inciatives was accepted thus making SAS a minority shareholder.

There were reports of the staff planning a strike with respect to the viability of the company when the Madrid crash occurred. In the year 2009, the airline wanted a public input on a new emblem. The winner was then officially confirmed in the year 2009.
SpanAir has started to apply the new identity of corporate to the aircraft in June 2009.
The new head office of SpanAir is the SpanAir building or the Edifici SpanAir in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat near Barcelona.

Earlier the head office of SpanAir was in the SpanAir Building inthe Palma De Mallorca Airport. In the year 2008, SpanAir said that Palma de Mallorca would be the head office and that it would take its office to Barcelona.
In them year 2009, in May Barcelona was the registered domicile for SpanAir. The airline started searching for a headquarters in Barcelona. In the same year around June 200 employees staged a protest outside the Palma offices against the hasty time frame to move the headquarters.
