Visit the attractions from Sofia Airport Bulgaria



Sofia is the city of Bulgaria and its airport is situated at a distance of 5 kilometre to the east of Sofia. The airport handles nearly 3.23 million passengers every year. It was earlier built during 1930s to serve the city. The code of the airport is SOF and has only two terminals. The airport also has its official website as www.sofia-airport.bg. The airport built a new runway system on 31 August 2006. It was made as 210 metres towards north of the old runway and the length of it is of 3,600 metres towards the eastern end by crossing the Iskar river bed on a specifically constructed bridge.

Terminal 1 is famous to the inbound and outbound passengers residing in the city and was built during the first half of 20th century. This terminal was opened on 16 September 1937. Terminal 2 was formally opened on 27 December 2006. It was opened with the symbolic arrival of Bulgaria Air flight FB 408 that comes from Brussels. This terminal was among the major projects in Bulgaria that was made to obtain funds from EU ISPA programme. The terminal holds 7 air-bridges and 38 check-in desks. It has 50,000 square metre of area with a car parking space where 820 vehicles could be parked.

Expanding the infrastructure of the airport is under process that has been completed till now. Infrastructure also includes artificial lake and also a fountain. The airlines ticketing offices, tourist and car hire desks, banks, post office and cafes all could be found in the public area of Terminal 2. Terminal 2 was planned specially to serve the disabled passengers. From one terminal to another a disabled passenger has got facilities like multi-storey car park with lifts and escalators.

With this some cargo flights were also operated by the airport like Cargoair, DHL Express, TNT Airways and UPS Airlines that operated by Farnair. Overall these flights made the airport one of the well-known and best.

One can reach to the airport from the centre of the city and the bridge will lead you ahead from the centre point of the city. All you need is to drive to the Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard and then follow the signs on the road to Christopher Columbus Boulevard. Then what you will reach to the airport without any Hassels. Between the two terminals a free shuttle runs to serve the travellers. Hire a car from any of the companies at the airport and reach to your destination.

Car parking spaces are also available in front of the old terminal building. Multi-level parking garage is also connected to the departures area of the new terminal that provides 820 parking spaces. Besides car, bus and Taxi services are also available at the airport for the travellers. Frequent transportation services are there for the passengers to go wherever they want at the city. For any information one can head to the information desks located in both the terminal buildings.

Airport offers all basic facilities like for money and communications there are banks, bureaux de change, ATMs, post office and wireless Internet access are available. For eating and drinking there are restaurants, a pizzeria and a self-service area where international dishes, sandwitches, salads, soft drinks, beer and wine could be found. Other things are also available at the bars. YOy can try shopping at some shops. Duty-free shops are also there to cater the huge number of passengers. Facilities like lost and found luggage’s are also there in the airport. With this some other facilities are also available like first aid and doctor.

For conference and business facilities you can head to the ‘Sofia’ Business Class Lounge situated on the second floor of the passenger terminal which is in the transit area of the Departures hall. For accommodation you won’t get any hotels in the airport but you will get some good hotels in Central Sofia.

If you get time at the airport then visit some major attractions of Sofia like Boyana Church, Rila Monastery, Central Sofia Synagogue, Vitosha Mountain, Alexander Nevski Church, The Routunda of St George and many other worth visiting sites. Try some activities at Vitosha Mountain which is a famous tourist spot of Sofia and just get chilled out there.
