Murtala Muhammed International Airport lies at the African state of Lagos in Ikeja, Nigeria. This airport was originally known as Lagos International Airport but was renamed after an ex-Nigerian military chief of state Murtala Muhammed during the construction of this airport. The international terminal of this airport was constructed similar to the Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and was opened in the year 1979 on 15th March. The code of this airport is LOS.
This airport is the major base for flag carrier airlines, Nigerian Eagle Airlines and Arik Air in Nigeria. This airport has two airports, one is domestic and other is international that lies at a distance of one kilometre from each other. These two terminals share the same runways. Due to the incident of fire in the domestic terminal, it was moved to the other location which is Lagos domestic terminal in the year 2000. This resulted to a new construction of a domestic terminal which was commissioned on April 7, 2007. This airport later has been expanded further with the arrival and departure halls and serves nearly 5,136,697 passengers today.
The International Airlines that operates from terminal 1 are Aero Contractors, Afriqiyah Airways, Air France, Air Ivoire, Alitalia, Arik Air, British Airways, China Southern Airlines, Delta Air Lines, EgyptAir, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Iberia Airlines, Kenya Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, Middle East Airlines, Nigerian Eagle Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, South African Airways, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.
Besides these, the domestic airlines are operated from terminal 2 and they are Aero Contractors, Chanchangi Airlines, Dana Air, IRS Airlines and Nigerian Eagle Airlines. The general aviation from domestic terminal is Arik Air, Associated Aviation and Overland Airways. Rests of the Cargo airlines that are operated from this airport are Air France Cargo, Allied Air, Avient Aviation, Cargolux, Jade Cargo and Star Airlines.
To reach to the city centre from this airport there is a highway that takes 30 to 60 minutes driving depends on the traffic. You can park your car outside the airport where 750 cars can be parked. In the terminal of the airport you will get desks of Avis and Hertz from where you can hire a car. Even you can hire one from the big international hotels. All you have to note is that there is no more petrol pumps in Nigeria so ensure that you have sufficient petrol. In fact, the condition of roads are poor where you will get traffic jams and stay alert as robbery can also happen.
For you convenience taxis will be a better mode of transportation that will lead you to the city. You will get yellow taxis outside the terminal. Just hire it and tell the driver where exactly you want to go. Further help like tourist information and even hotel reservation can be done through the customer service desk in the arrival hall. With this you will get basic facilities like bank, bureau de change and post office at the International terminal. Facilities like restaurants and bars are also available at the airport. In the international terminal you will get duty free as well as medical facilities.
